WORLD CLEANUP DAY 2020 | WASTE AND BRAND AUDITS REPORT | DAR ES SALAAM AND REGIONS
ANA’S FOREWORD
Since 2018 Nipe Fagio is the leader of the Let’s Do It Tanzania movement, having as its peak engagement
the World Cleanup Day. In 2020, the World Cleanup Day (Siku ya Usafi Duniani) was held on the 19th of
September.
World Cleanup Day is a civic movement, uniting 180 countries and millions of people across the world to clean up the
planet.
For us, one of the most important aspects of the World Cleanup Day is the realization of Waste and Brand
Audits (WABA) in the waste collected. This year 19 cleanup sites were audited in 12 regions of the country.
Using the Break Free From Plastic’s Brand Audit Toolkit and forms, participants were trained to: define
their cleanup area; collect all waste found in that area; and count and record the brand, parent
manufacturer, product type (food, personal care, or household product), and packaging type (HDPE, PET,
PVC, PP, PS, multi-layer plastics, single-layer plastics, and other) of 10% of all waste collected, as the
areas cleaned had accumulated a huge amount of waste and plastic pollution, and a brand audit on every
piece of trash collected was impossible. We also recorded other materials, like aluminum and glass.
The only data included in this report are the individual pieces of waste directly accounted for in the brand
audits. No extrapolation or statistical methods were used in aggregating these data.
The success of the campaign, that over 3 years has engaged more than 56,000 people in Tanzania and
removed nearly 30,000 bags of trash from the environment (over 626,393kg of waste), and audited
almost 218,000 pieces of waste, is a direct result of the engagement and collaboration of multiple
environmental players standing together for the common goal of a clean Tanzania. In 2020, more than
250 organizations participated in the World Cleanup Day.
Once again it is important to highlight the incredible opportunity that we have in Tanzania: 75% of the
waste found in brand audits is locally produced. Beyond that, we have already taken action by banning
carrier plastic bags, and we are surrounded by two countries, Rwanda and Kenya, that have also taken
severe action against single-use plastic, making the East-Africa community a world-leading and progressive
regional group against plastic pollution. That means that we can solve the problem locally and set a
meaningful example to the world; a path that requires private sector engagement, government oversight
and civil society awareness.
With that, I would like to thank everyone who participated and contributed to the 2020 World Cleanup
Day. I hope that we can use this partnership to work together on designing a Just Recovery, prioritizing
social justice and environmental stewardship to ensure that the next generations have an opportunity to
live in a world that we would be proud of having built.

3.0 PLASTIKI YAKO MAZINGIRA YETU
Nipe Fagio, in partnership with a coalition of organisations and environmental stakeholders, demands
restrictions to the production of single-use plastic in Tanzania.
We recognise and support the outstanding effort that the Tanzanian government has made developing and
implementing the Plastic Bag Ban and we are very proud of living in a country that has taken tangible
action to address plastic pollution.
We also value the importance of Tanzanian industries for the country's prosperity and therefore we hope
to find a mutually beneficial solution in which industries produce without harming the environment as an
unintended consequence. Single-use must be replaced with sustainable product delivery systems to ensure
that people, profit and planet are in balance.
Single-use plastic, with special emphasis on plastic bags, sachets and coloured PET bottles, create an
increased hazard to the communities and the environment of Tanzania. The indiscriminate production of
single-use plastic to wrap fast-consuming goods contributes to flooding, the climate emergency and the
strong presence of microplastics in our rivers and ocean.
Research says that 80% of the plastic that enters the oceans come from rivers and waterways, and it has
been proved that all samples of salt tested worldwide contain microplastics, meaning that human beings
are now consuming microplastics, a hazardous substance, regularly.
Due to all the above, we advocate for the extension of the plastic bag ban into a single-use plastic ban --
together we can do it!
