RECYCLING
Recycling
Recycling is basically taking
something old and making
it into something new.
The process of recycling
requires a waste product
to be returned to a factory
where it is remade into
either the same product
or something different.
For example factories can
make new plastic items
such as buckets from old
discarded plastic items.
Did you know?
• The city produces around4,300 tons of waste per day. If one elephant
= 6 tons, People in Dar es Salaam throw away the equivalent of over
700 elephants per day of trash!!!
• But only 40% of Waste goes to a dump site, where does the other 60%
go? Forests, Rivers and the Ocean.
• Rains wash the trash into drains which then flow into the ocean. The
trash blocks our drains and causesflooding and increases the outbreak
of many diseases including mosquito borne (Malaria, Dengue Fever),
typhoid and cholera.
• Burning trash releases toxic chemicals into the air like cyanide,
mercury and arsenic which are all dangerous to our health.
How long do each of these types of waste take to break down?
• Paper = 2 Months.
• Aluminium can = 80 years.
• Plastic bottle = 500 years (although it never decomposes, it just breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces).
• Glass bottle = thousands of years.
That’s why we need to recycle
Where does it go?
Recycling one bottle can power a computer for 25 minutes
Recycling one aluminum can saves enoughenergy to
power a television for 3 hours.
White paper recycled to
toilet paper
Cardboard boxes
recycled to envelopes
Bottles recycled to
make new bottles
Scrap metal to nails
Recycling a ton of paper is equal to saving 17 trees
1 recycled plastic bottle saves enoughenergy to
power a 60-wattlight bulb for 3 hours
